"The story of our dogs is the story of us. A dog can't change the world but they can change your world.
And if each of us can pass along even a fraction of the unmitigated, world changing love we receive from our dogs?
Maybe we can see about that whole changing the world thing." - Will Kearney

Chia is one of those pups who is so darned cute that she melts your heart right away. I so loved doing the photoshoot with her and her human parents. They’re wonderful owners, and the three make a great team together. Chia’s face was so expressive as we wandered around the Arbutus neighbourhood where she does her normal daily walks. Her mom works at Simply Natural, which is a great shop on West Boulevard (and the place Gracie and I went to puppy class, so fun!) so you just know she gets her fair share of delicious and nutritious food.chia_mosaic2PIN

Tater Tot was recently adopted from the Vancouver SPCA by Darren. Darren originally planned to get a foster dog, and when he got a call from the SPCA saying they had a pup with kennel cough who needed a place to rest, he said it would be no problem. He drove over to the SPCA, filled out the paperwork, and by the time he was done, a staff member had already loaded Tater into Darren’s SUV.

Darren hopped in his truck, and looked back to see the sweetest face. “I said, ‘Oh… but you’re so cute!’,” he remembers. Darren wasn’t ready to commit to a dog yet (ha ha) so figured he would have Tater for a week or two. The rest is history – Tater quickly snuggled his way into Darren’s heart, and the two are inseparable. Darren works from home so Tater has constant companionship, and the two head out for at least two long walks a day. A match made in heaven. We had so much fun during our photo shoot – Tater loves to bring you the ball to throw, but then not drop it, and look at you with a very pleased glint in his eye. Tater is an incredibly cuddly little guy who loves to be touched, petted and fawned over.

Saying Goodbye to Shayla

When people ask me what kind of photography I do, “pet photography” usually gets one of two responses. Either it’s a chuckle and an “oh how weird!” or it’s a “Yeah.. I want that. My dog/cat/horse is so awesome and here’s why.” I guess I’ve always felt a tiny bit awkward about it, in the same way I’ve always felt a tiny bit awkward about the fact that I love animals so much that even killing a spider is too much for me to consider.

The real reason I got into being a pet photographer is because I believe the relationships we have with animals can be incredible, life changing partnerships. And I think these relationships deserve to be celebrated and recorded. So when Jocelyn got in touch with me for some photos and timidly asked if they could be done “In the next few days or so” as her pup Shayla had cancer and a prognosis to pass very shortly, I was all in.

Joycelyn is a spunky little sprite of a girl who, 9 years ago, adopted a dog who probably matches her pound for pound or may even outweigh her. They’re an unlikely combination. A young, single working woman with a huge dog full of exuberance. But somehow it worked. They clicked and have been co-pilots for the better part of a decade. Now that relationship has to come to an end. I’m so glad Joycelyn decided to capture some moments before it did.

This shoot was a heartbreaking but beautiful day. Big love to Shayla and her mom.
